Not one week goes by that the Swedish aren’t giving me a great, blog-worthy track to write, about. Music releases tend to slow down at this time in the year but, when I’ve checked out my inbox this past week, I’ve received more submissions in from Sweden than I would normally. Stockholm act Full Of Keys (Anni Bernhard) has one of the best Scandinavian releases with “Don’t Look Back“.
It is a song which sets off at a sedate pace, presenting Anni’s elegantly haunting vocals while not giving a hint of the epic nature of pop banger chorus ahead, until it leaps out at a breath of a seconds notice. Strangely it reminded me of a visit once had to the Gulf of Mexico, and a trip I took out on a boat, to spot dolphins. As this element of surprise and split-second anticipation evokes the same feeling of watching a Great White or any other big fish propel itself up out of its watery habitat. It’s a lovely, exhilarating connection to the music which becomes even more majestically beguiling when an orchestra and strings add their weight to the enchanting melody.
“Don’t Look Back” is a joint effort together with songwriter and producer Alx Go (Tove Lo, Icona Pop, Zara Larsson and Erik Hassle). It is a stunning track, featuring a melodic pop style reminiscent of Robyn. Anni’s beautiful rendition exposes her powerful voice and portrays the emotion in her lyrics. It is raw, emotively powerful and absolutely, breathtaking. The vivid sense of empowerment proves hard to ignore.
