My mailbag has been a little bit light on things to make me go wow this week. But I had an email drop in giving me the heads up on “Better With You” the latest release from Californian based musician Michl. I have previously been aware of Michl even though he still insists on keeping his image down on the low. I feel the enigmatic guise gimmick is now working on, borrowed time for the relative newcomer. Afterall he’s already toured with Tove Lo, Broods, Marian Hill and Mura Masa. The latter who has been brought in and assists with the production on the new track.
What it boils down to, is that we like to place a face to the music and the Cali up-and-comer just hasn’t been willing to commit to this as yet. Be that as it may, I’m prepared to cut some slack for “Better With You” because it is by far the most upbeat effort in the musician’s archive to date. And also the debut album is slated for release this summer with a headline tour planned for autumn, there’s really, not much scope for keeping his identity under wraps anymore.
The introduction section of the new song is quite typical of Michl, being that he does favour a slow build approach. What is startlingly different is the exposed guitar picked, opening bars that make way for their accompaniment of Mura Masa‘s signature, woozy sub-bass beats. When all of the track’s individual, elements come together, the dreamy vocals drape over the futuristic soundscape with an extra blissful allure. Until now I haven’t readily been with taken with, Michl or for that matter Mura Masa, however, this collaboration works for both artists better good to my mind.
The ruminating bass-line really brings this song together, making it all kinds of, wonderful. The tracks understated elegance validates the internet hype surrounding both artists.
