When you think that one Eurovision contestant may have an edge. Another makes you wedge your foot deep in your mouth. Sometimes you shouldn’t speak up before you don’t know what lies ahead. We’ve learned that today with Australia’s Dami Im and her Eurovision entry and video ‘Sound Of Silence.

A quick little background on Dami Im. Born in South Korea, Dami Im immigrated to Australia at the age of 9. Im had a short career as a gospel singer in her native Korea performing at various church camps. In 2010, she would release her debut album Dream, consisting of 9 tracks recorded to raise money for church endeavors. In 2011, the album would be rereleased with 2 extra tracks sung in English. Following the release of her debut she would follow up with two more EPs prior to auditioning to what would be a very successful stint on Australia’s X Factor. Following her win on the X Factor, Im would become the first X Factor contestant to follow up a number one single with a number one album on the ARIA charts.

Now. For Eurovision 2016.

‘Sound Of Silence’ seems to take a couple of cues from 2014 winner Conchita Wurst. Keep it simple and let the ballad’s power speak for itself. Filmed in what appears to be an empty warehouse with one dancer brings out the loneliness. Though what is lacking in visuals is clearly made up in vocal prowess and emotional delivery.

A subtle reference to trying to connect to your loved one though modern technology but not being to hold each other carries sense of the darkness that lingers when you’re away from your loved one. It feels as if she is wanting to scream that there is no substitute for being able to hold that person, physically. A strong orchestral melody in the verses highlights the emotion of Dami’s lyrics. Dark, thought provoking and downright powerful.

Rich in melody and passionate in nature, ‘Sound Of Silence’ is a very classic and powerful pop ballad that will stand out loudly amongst the sea of Euro Pop stars.

Will ‘Sound Of Silence’ bring on the cheers from the Eurovision viewers or will Dami Im just stand in silence on the Stockholm stage? We’ll have to wait until May to see how she does! Until then. Stay tuned to EQ Music Blog for more Eurovision tidbits!
