Having been a big fan of Bright Light Bright Light over the years and having spent numerous occasions getting-to-know him throughout the ‘Make Me Believe In Hope’ era, it was really nice to sit down with Rod Thomas recently and have more of a catch-up rather than your standard music interview.
Rod has been rather bi-continental lately falling head-over-heels in love with NYC. I haven’t seen him for quite some time since he did Poptronik Festival promo for us back in the summer of 2012. So having not (unusually) seen him out on the electronic pop scene for well over a year, I was delighted to get an hour with him in Shoreditch before he used his well-travelled passport and Virgin Atlantic frequent flyer card again to head back to New York City where he shares a humble abode with fellow pop music bro, Del Marquis of Scissor Sisters.
What did we talk about? Well theres that duet with Elton John for one thing. Then he also comments on Lady Gaga’s thoughts around her keynote at SXSW this year. And then there’s some dish about his new album and recording that heartwarming track that I love so much called ‘In Your Care’. Rod even talks about how having a musical family is very important in today’s new music industry – which, for me was especially refreshing since we are on the same page there with our collective of artists, the EQ Music family, of which Rod has been a part of for quite some time.
Grab a cup of coffee and make yourself comfortable and join Rod Thomas and I through a little trip through his latest era and hear us reflect on how the music industry has changed and what we think about the current state of play for electronic pop artists.
Oh, and get yourself of copy of his new EP ‘I Wish We Were Leaving’ which only features the one and only Elton John on vox.
