Wolfette

When a pop video starts with the words ‘WARNING – Contains flashing images’, you know it’s going to be good. Wolfette has impressed EQ before with her previous releases “Vanilla” and “Waiting For The Explosion”, and she wowed us with her live show at an EQ Sunday School gig earlier in the year.

She’s now back with a new song, “Different Story”, and it comes with her first proper music video, too. We had a chat with Wolfette to find out what the video’s all about, and what she’s got for us to enjoy in the future. Read on for all the latest from Wolfette, and don’t forget to check out her brand new video for “Different Story” below.

Hey, Wolfette. How’s life?
Yeah, really good thanks! Lots of exciting things going on. I’m enjoying the summer and “Different Story” is being received really well which is great.

“Different Story” is not a happy song. What’s the story behind it?
It’s about that spark of hope in a dying relationship – remembering why you loved each other in the first place and realising how much you would miss each other if you broke up. It’s about giving things one last try.

The video – your first – is just as impressive as the track. Is this a sign that even bigger things are on the way?
Thank you! I’m really happy with the response it’s been getting. This is definitely the start of a new chapter – I’m hoping that “Different Story”, along with the video, will help me reach a wider audience.

You’ve said that you’re inspired by strong frontwomen. Do you think being a strong female helps you in pop?
Yeah, absolutely. It’s a tough business so you need to have an inner confidence and be strong in yourself. You’ve got to know exactly what you want and be single minded in getting it.

With that in mind, how would you describe yourself as an artist?
Passionate, independent, creative, feisty!

Your earlier tracks show off a kind of rockier style – how does rock and electro work together for you?
I absolutely love it – I think that bands like Garbage, Depeche Mode and The Prodigy, who combine both aspects, are just brilliant. The combination really inspires me.

You’ve been working hard on several tracks. What can we expect from your new music, and is an album on the way?
Yes, I’ve already got loads of songs finished. There’s definitely a continuation of the electro-rock theme -lots of dirty guitar riffs and distorted basslines along with lots of lovely electroness. Lyrically there’s lots of attitude!

What’s it like being a brand new artist and waiting to hear what people make of your work? It’s a scary place, surely?
It’s actually really exciting! I can’t wait to get out there and play my new material to people and really get things moving.

What drives you?
I get great satisfaction from finishing a song and a huge buzz from performing. I want to be a successful artist and known for writing great songs.

What question would you have hated me to ask?!
My most embarrassing moment – there are too many to mention!

You played at a live EQ event earlier this year and were brilliant – any live plans for the summer?
Thank you! I’ve been gigging loads and have a couple more dates in the diary so far. There’s Tuesday 19th July at the O2 Academy Islington and Thursday 18th Aug at the Workshop – where I played for EQ. It’s a great little venue!

What else should we look out for from Wolfette?
You’ll be able to hear a remix of “Different Story” shortly, more live shows and either another single or an EP after this.
