Here is a duo that popped up on my radar recently. And once discovered, it was hard to shake their intoxicating pull. Milan-based electroclash duo Lipstains have made a striking first impression with their debut releases “Poison” and “Vicious”. Two exhilarating tracks that ooze underground attitude and raw club energy.
There isn’t much documented online about Lipstains just yet (believe me, I did some investigative digging). Yet sometimes the most exciting new artists arrive without context, allowing the music and aesthetic to speak for themselves. In Lipstains’ case, the message is loud and clear. Their sound subsequently fuses skittering electro beats, hedonistic indie-sleaze energy, and a punk-leaning vocal delivery. A style that instantly sets them apart from the increasingly crowded dancefloor landscape.
Self-described as “the toxic baby of Crystal Castles and The Kills,” Lipstains wear their influences proudly. Above all they deliver on that promise with every distorted synth line and snarling vocal hook. There’s an effortless cool at play here. Especially, where electroclash grit collides with post-punk swagger, creating tracks that feel tailor-made for sweat-soaked underground clubs and late-night warehouse parties.
The duo consists of Demetrio Papagni and Ana Julia Knoll, with Ana Julia positioned front and centre. While information on Demetrio remains elusive, Ana Julia brings an undeniable presence to the project. Reportedly she balances the band alongside a career as an international model. Likewise, that air of mystery only adds to Lipstains’ allure, reinforcing their status as artists thriving just beneath the surface of the mainstream.
As Lipstains continue to gain traction within the underground club scene, “Poison” and “Vicious” feel like early warning shots… bold, brash and buzzing with intent. This is electroclash with teeth, style, and a genuine sense of danger. However, Lipstains are only just getting started. Therefore, consider this your cue to pay attention. Sometimes the most thrilling artists are the ones still operating in the shadows, and Lipstains are glowing neon in the dark.
