Lately, I have really enjoyed listening to the NYC-based dark-pop artist LEXXE. I had some press come in, alerting me to the song “X,” the latest single release from her. Subsequently, it has not taken me long to find out that the song was not the only thing that is addictive. In this track, she immerses us in a narrative about her father, who passed away 20 years ago this year, and delivers an ode in his honour. My fascination lies in the retelling of this real-life event. That I find equally alluring.

“A few years ago I was performing and could absolutely swear I saw my father sitting front row,” LEXXE says. “I love to write about the supernatural and the things we don’t understand, so while I acknowledge that seeing him could have been something my mind made up, it doesn’t, make it any less poignant.”

Listen on Apple Music

The track is made up using a most delicious combination of shimmery, dark pop and synths. And yet, the production provides pulsating computer beats indebted to the 80s in style. That this is a track that feels that it would not feel out of place if it were used in a movie soundtrack of the time.

LEXXE is a performer first and foremost, no doubt. However, the lyrical narratives she shares are wholly unique. Therefore, above all, these beg to be listened to. What transpires is totally fresh, totally sincere and endlessly listenable.

From listening to the song “X,” the message I took away from it was, that people, friends etc., never completely leave us when they pass on. They remain near to us but just in different ways. LEXXE’s apparition experience was an unexpected sighting and yet sparked this dazzling synth-pop track into fruition.

What LEXXE offers the music world is something totally unique, splashed with a sprinkling of nostalgia vibes and yet, seamlessly fresh. A hattrick of achievements, no less.
