It has been absolutely ages since I heard about an emerging electro-pop artist as innovative as Glasgow’s Leif Coffield. I think, because of the heaviness, the world has been under during the last twelve months, most music releases served the purpose of endeavouring to bring joy and happiness into our lives. It has been a difficult time for all in the music industry, forward-thinking musicians and newcomers alike have probably felt the struggle most. If you’re both a newcomer and a forward-thinking electro-pop innovator you’ve likeliest experienced, the struggle, doubly. I also think. A year on from the start of the pandemic, what people want from their music diet has changed, again. The tedium of our lockdown lives has left us with cravings for adventure and variation. Leif Coffield striking out with the track “Say My Name” fits the electronic-pop innovator brief.
I fell charmed by “Say My Name” because it fed me, an interesting, rhythm and sonically soft vocals, which almost sent me into a hypnotic state. Listening to the track, I began to feel that it has some special powers. My inner femme-bot became sparked to life because of becoming switched on by the robotic chant, that features. I spoke about yearnings for adventure and variation previously (referring to being in lockdown). But it is also these exact cravings which are explored in “Say My Name.” The track lyrically tackles the feeling of being suppressed in a relationship and the longing to break free and rediscover yourself. Although the artful music video better explains this.
It is the alt-pop indie-electronic leaning style of the track which has totally revitalised my senses. I hadn’t realised, how much I was missing discovering electronic-pop music that pushes the boundaries, until “Say My Name” turned up in my inbox.
What is the sound Leif Coffield strives for?… he says,
“I would describe my music as if hip hop impregnated, acoustic and gave birth to a baby that was raised in an electronic family. I always try to evoke emotion in the song whether it be through the instrumentation or accompanying vocal melody and lyrics.”
Leif Coffield is mindful of the transcendent properties of electronica. As I am of the changing digital world, we live in. But I will never tire of electronic music because there is always somewhere new it can go. It just needs an imaginative and creative mind to take it these places. There is always, room for a new pioneer in electronic-pop circles. After, listening to Leif Coffield’s latest tracks. I believe I have found the next electro innovator, stepping into these shoes.
