London based Issey Cross is a newcomer I was made aware of last month. Her opening gambit came by way of the broody track “Who,” A defiant introduction met with a curious undertone about a boyfriend who cheated. The track while interesting and confident just didn’t seem to be melodically in-keeping within the lanes of EQ Music Blog. It did, however, serve the purpose of fueling intrigue with me. I thought I’d wait and see what Issey turned up with next before committing any support. The sophomore effort “Boys Make Promises” sits a little better with me. There is some evidence of pop mixed in with the Billie Eilish melodically dark type hues. Her voice is impressively striking. This being what has swung me into action this early, before the debut EP, “Mirrors Don’t Lie, set for release March 25th, arrives.

Her tracks thus far are stemming from a left-of-field trajectory. Yet, the production is pretty magnificent, a widescreen kind of epic. In fact “Boys Make Promises” does have the style of a soundtrack or a theme song. A ‘thriller’ concept would suit. While evident, Issey has experienced heartbreak, she is in no way about to be as sweet or as poignant as Adele when sharing her feelings about commitment in relationships. Issey is about to come for the wrong-doers in the fashion she sees fits best. Which would be revenge served cold with a haunting, R’n’B electronic shaped mould.

With Issey Cross the intent is clear, to lead not to follow. Establish her own niche sound, identifiable as the Issey Cross brand. It’s true, her two-toned neon hair is only one pointer that marks her out. The other is her artistry, which she has demonstrated she has an abundance of.
