The notable rise of K-pop artists crossing over into our music scene has seen a rapid increase in recent years. Notably with an array of Eastern pop acts following in the footsteps of groups such as BTS, aespa, and BLACKPINK. While some artists stick to recording in their native language, they often desire to integrate into the Western world, leading them to switch to singing in English. This blend of East and West musical styles has gained considerable traction. However, amidst this trend, I want to highlight Helen Ganya, a Brighton-based, Scottish-Thai musician. In her latest work, which coincides with the 7th February release of her third album “Share Your Care,” she delves into her native roots, exploring sounds from her childhood. Thus creating a rich tapestry of heritage music from an authentic perspective.
After the loss of her grandmother, Helen entered a profound period of soul searching. She experienced a deep realization that her connection to her Thai heritage seemed to be fading away. Inspired by this reflection, she felt a strong desire to preserve her memories and cultural identity. As a musician, creating an album became a natural choice for her, allowing her to blend unique styles with traditional Thai sounds.
A good example of the hybrid musical style is seen in the latest focus single “Fortune.”
Commenting on the track Helen Ganya says: “The floaty glossiness of the khim (Thai dulcimer) flies through ‘Fortune’, a track for my mum and for all the diasporic mums out there. I was thinking about the sacrifices so many Asian mums make and giving value, appreciation and recognition to them.”
