If you have been paying close attention to my blog posts recently. You should have noticed I have already mentioned the intriguing new artist project Daddy Squad on here. (But where?…) The music brains behind it are known to us. (Clue: EQ Music Blog has written about them numerous times). You might be able to solve the puzzle by looking at the press photo above. But also, because we never saw a lot of his face, in his former role as one half of indie electro-pop duo Monarchy. You are forgiven for not having worked out. Daddy Squad is the new solo venture of Andrew Armstrong.
I had my eyeballs all over the Daddy Squad social media platforms. Long before a press release even dropped into my inbox. My eyes were lit up at the bio shared on Spotify. Where the project is described as. “Where nothing is sacred, everything is borrowed, and nothing is safe.” The statement. Sounded purely delicious, to me. My excitement was already on the ascent. Yet was to go sky-high when the announcement came. The first official Daddy Squad single, “My Magic Number” is a collaboration with the glamonatrix, Dita Von Teese.
Andrew says of the track… “It started as an instrumental, but straight away, I could hear Dita’s voice on it, doing spoken word. I imagined it a mix of Grace Jones and Miss Kitten. The words and imagery just fell out. It’s surrealistic and colourful. Dita’s voice has the perfect purr for that.”
In truth. Andrew is not revealing all about “My Magic Number“. It was pitched to me as being. A camp. Sexy and punchy Italo disco styled track. I was failed to be warned how the track puts the listener into a hypnotic trance. Very robotic. Hypnotic. Mesmerising. If you know what I mean. Dita’s whispery. Seductive vocal has a lot to do with that. It is also a hella catchy piece of music and a complete earworm. I am one of those people. For whom it takes me some considerable time to properly wake up, in the morning. I know for sure. A quick blast of “My Magic Number” is the exact motivation. I would need to have my circuits fired up and ready to go.
