In my goal of bringing our blog readers the new best pop, my untiring search has led me to the fast-rising Scottish singer-songwriter, Aaron Smith. In the first instance, much has been made of the fact that he was discovered by Lewis Capaldi’s manager. (Although all similarities between these artists stop there.) 25-year-old Aaron broke out with his heart-aching ballads as the world went into lockdown. Since we are coming out of the other side of this trauma whose effects were felt worldwide. Like many of us, Aaron has gained a fresh perspective on life. He returns armed with not only a new mindset there is a new track, “You,” where he is embracing a shinier electronic-pop sound.
I think it is an inspired idea to make the switch from sad boy pop ballads. To that of implementing his singer-songwriter skills with the softly polished production genius of Ketil Jansen of Norwegian indie-electro duo Lemaitre. By his own admission Aaron who divides his time between Glasgow and sunny Los Angeles, comments
“I feel like I have really grown in the past 18 months as a person and as a musician. Writing this sort of music has helped me to unlock a new part of something I never knew existed in me.”
The artist who toured with Ellie Goulding has realised the benefits of looking at life through a brighter lens. While flanking his earnest words against the backdrop of sonic dance-pop beats works a treat. The Lillie Wojcik-directed visual clip for the track is where we notice Aaron indulge more in his light-hearted side. In addition to highlighting the pressures heaped on musicians to create content, he also pokes fun at it.
This is the way forward Aaron. A good measure of humour done well breathes even more personality into the piece. Music fans will equally be receptive to this, as I was.
Expect to hear a lot more about Aaron Smith going forward. He pretty much defines the words next-big-thing in music to a tee.
