How’s your RuPaul’s Drag Race herstory, girlfriends? Are we completely up to speed with every Drag Race series worldwide? I mean, keeping up with RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and the American mothership is one thing, right? However, with the franchise now spanning 15 international editions, I’ll happily forgive anyone if a few have slipped beneath your radar!
Down under, viewers have been getting their latest dose of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent with Drag Race Down Under vs The World. And wouldn’t you know it, Australian electro-pop rising star BEKS has found herself right in the middle of the action.
BEKS appeared as a guest judge on the opening episode of the current season. Also her fan-favourite track “Melodrama” provided the soundtrack for the lip sync battle. Now that’s what I call a career milestone!
Naturally, it feels like the perfect moment to give “Melodrama” another spin, quite literally. Enter DJ and producer VNSSA, who has been turning heads herself after collaborating with Trixie Mattel on a Scissor Sisters cover. She also takes the reins for a flourishing new dancefloor remix of BEKS’ track. And there’s even more reason for me to be excited because joining this revamped version is one of my personal favourites, queer pop force Bentley Robles.
Well, strike me down. This is a remix I need to get down my ears pronto!
It is exhilarating watching a track find a whole new life through the Drag Race universe before being catapulted back onto the dancefloor. For BEKS, “Melodrama” feels like another sparkling marker in what is shaping up to be a seriously breakout year.
So, consider this your reminder to keep BEKS firmly on your pop radar. Between Drag Race, a guest judging spot and a fresh VNSSA and Bentley Robles-powered remix, the melodrama is very much continuing. And frankly, I’m quite happy to stay for the next episode.
