Lion Babe

So much celebrated New York breaking act, Lion Babe have got me at “Where Do We Go”, the final single push before debut album “Begin” drops.

The duo have quite become talked about over the past year especially for their slick soulful pop / r’n’b deployed compositions which to my mind although, strong in accomplishment where at first a touch leaning on the full-on soul embraced trajectory. Then they became acquainted with Disclosure and “Hourglass” a track on the duo’s sophomore album “Caracal” happened, and as such was regarded as one of the few highlights of the lesser received in critical acclaim, long player.

There is no denying that Lion Babe are coming through the ranks at an impressive professional level, much owing to vocalist Jillian Hervey who exhibits real honeyed charismatic charm that no doubt, clearly appears inherited from her mother Vanessa Williams. In the production too, Lucas Goodman offers nothing but high bar arrangements of the slickest caliber, all of which draw to the conclusion as surely, placing them as the USA’s answer to AlunaGeorge.

As “Where Do We Go” arrives, Lion Babe’s neo-soul influential sound is put into a nu-retro spin off and werked up with disco tinged funkiness which comes through smooth and blistering with the feel-good vibes.

What can be said of the accompanying video is this. Music and city night time lights come together like mac ‘n’ cheese, and rama lama to our ding dong. Tried & tested. Hair flipping and smooching invested. Built of a budget which is all about creating a visual which entertains the eye, and this it does in as many amplified volumes as it provides Le Chic disco nostalgia.
