Sam and the Womp

I really thought that the first time I wrote about Sam and the Womp, would also be the last time I wrote about Sam and the Womp! Since, I couldn’t place them going beyond their crazy party song “Bom Bom”.

Yet here I am three years down the line and about to drop some new words on the wompsters latest antics! Believe me I find it more than crazy, but it’s all too true!

Although, there is no getting away from the fact that Sam and the Womp will be forever known because of “Bom Bom” becoming such a runaway hit, being that the legs on it still keep it surfacing in opportune places. The current being as part of the TV advertising campaign for a leading mobile phone network.

A few tracks further on Sam Richie and Bloom De Wilde now bid a return with new effort “Fireflies” and more to the point it’s no way as bad as my initial suspicion first lead me to assume.

Fireflies” is no “Bom Bom” but then Sam and the Womp never set out to curate songs made of the same old, although their signature ‘brass and bass’ ethic is the glue which holds their alternative take on their dance bops together. They are very much innovators of the kind that are appeased to be wacky and way out there flamboyant.

It has to be said I was not expecting much from this single, only curiosity finally got the better of me and consequently I’ve found myself quite enjoying this new one.

The most striking thing is NOT as you’d think it to be, given that they’ve gone all out on a glow-in-the-dark aesthetically eye pleasing visual. It’s rather that Bloom completely sounds so alike to Bjork here, that I feel that I’ve lost a bit of my tiny mind in some weird mind altering experiment. Yet I know I’m not hallucinating or anything as extreme, because my eyes are not deceiving me I am definitely seeing Bloom!

What we have learned here, is never say never, because there is always someone somewhere brewing up a little surprise. Very much surprised it was Sam and the Womp though!
